Martin Cross is a competitive; people-orientated manager who also maintains a good work/life balance. He completed a microbiology Ph.D. in 1985 before deciding to pursue a commercial career in the pharmaceutical industry. In 1985 he won a place on ICI’s Commercial Graduate Recruitment Scheme and was rapidly promoted to become an International Manager responsible for the Antiseptics portfolio worldwide. He then became one of the first UK ICI managers to work at an operational level at ICI in Japan in1988/89. The culture shock of working on the ¨shopfloor¨was a mind-expanding experience which helped shape his international mindset.

Upon his return from Japan Dr. Cross was promoted to International Marketing Manager for anaesthetics, where he led the global team to innovate and develop highly profitable major product improvements for ICI/Zeneca that still positively impact anaesthesia practice today.

In 1995 he was promoted to become a Senior Business Manager responsible for Japan and Portugal to ensure there was no ¨lost in translation¨ between the local and global business requirements. This resulted in Japan becoming much more integrated in the Global business which had major long-term impact on sales in Japan.

In 1999 during the merger between Astra and Zeneca, Dr. Cross became the Integration Leader for the World outside North America where he led a central team to direct the merger of the companies in 42 markets in 6 months.

Prior to the merger he had agreed on a year’s sabbatical to buy a yacht and sail the Atlantic with his family. This was to provide more work/life balance, but also proved an interesting life experience with many lessons also applicable to business. (Just think of being locked up with your teenage kids on a boat for weeks at a time.)

On his return Martin rejoined AstraZeneca and then in 2001 moved to Novartis as the Global Head of Marketing and Sales capabilities based in Switzerland. In this role he led his team to provide innovative solutions and support to the operating companies worldwide. In 2003 he was promoted as Managing Director and Country Head for Novartis in Australia and New Zealand. His coaching style moved his team from being one of the poorest performers to becoming the leading performer within Novartis by 2008 and also having the record for the most successful pharmaceutical launch in Australian history.

At the end of his 5-year contract for family reasons he decided to call Australia home and set up an automated communications business Voicescape.

When not working Martin enjoys competitive sailing and has won national championships with his family. He also enjoys training for and cycling long distances for charity and was one of a team that walked unaided across the Little Sandy Desert in Western Australia.
